Wynnum artist Graham W Smith should be well known to 'Australian Artist' readers with his first major article appearing in 1999 and his work appearing in the magazine every year since. With an art career spanning 40 years creating over 2000 paintings, Graham has won over 120 first prizes in all mediums including 42 major acquisitive awards. In 2000 Government House, Paddington - QLD, commissioned 6 watercolours for their permanent collection to show future generations how the estate appeared at the start of the new millennium.

Graham has been commissioned by the Commonwealth Government and Queensland Government to supply paintings of various Australian scenes for their offices and in 2004 St Andrew's Hospital commissioned 60 prints of twelve original watercolours plus commissioned a painting of their heritage listed building for their foyer and also purchased an additional painting.

The artist has works in Japanese, USA, NZ, UK and Hong Kong corporate offices with one major work in RMC's corporate box at AFL Headquarters in Melbourne which complements the 36 individual paintings of Brisbane landmarks which they commissioned. The artist has also completed many paintings for calendars, artist impressions for interior decorators, building companies, boat builders and nursing homes.

In 2004 Graham becase a Master Pastellist with The Pastel Society of Australia and in 2005 received a scholarship from the Pastel Society of America in New York and Arts Queensland provided a $3,300 travel grant to undertake this study tour of the USA. In the March 2006 issue of The Australian Artist magazine, Graham was a finalist in the "Flowers and Garden's" competition with his pastel of a Brisbane scene, "Astor Terrace" and in the September 2006 issue there was a 7 page article on the artist's recent tutoriing and painting trip around Australia. In 2007 his oil "Frenchman's Beach" was a finalist in the "Seascapes" competition in the magazine.

In demand as a generous, enthusiastic, well organised and professional tutor, Graham has conducted many repeat workshops in all mediums in Queensland, NSW, SA & WA and in in recent years has held over 70 classes in regional art galleries and art societies around Australia. As a practising artist in oils, watercolours, acrylics, mixed media and pastels, Graham has been invited to judge a number of art shows in Queensland.

The artist is an exhibiting member of Royal QLD Art Society, The Watercolour Society of QLD, Australian Society of Marine Artists, The Half Dozen Group of Artists.

From the artist: The strong forms of grain silos rising above the cultivation against the early morning light always interest me – the way the shadows are cast from one cylindrical form to the next. These are large objects in the rural landscape, and in this case the flowering canola presented a wonderful colour contrast. This work is based on the grain silos at Carathool in outback NSW. Simply beautiful.

From the artist: Those who know Moreton Island will have driven up the beach to Cape Moreton. In this work the sea mist rendered an almost monochromatic mood to everything. There were heavy clouds overhead, the tide was out and you could just see the lighthouse. I love the beach on days like this. Stunning in its simplicity.

'Cloistered Shadows' is a stunning watercolour featuring the Qld University Great Court. The iconic Cloister and Great Court feature distinctive sandstone, carved with historical scenes, figures, the names of great thinkers and teachers, coats of arms and carvings. Bruce has captured this stunning architecture and sense of place beautifully.

The Great Court is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register as well on the Register of the National Trust of Queensland so this iconic work has captured a unique piece of Qld history.

Absolutely thrilled when I saw we made the FRONT PAGE again in our local paper The Wynnum Herald, who, I must say have been fantastic supporters of our gallery for the last 10 years and more. They are always very interested in whats happening at our gallery and have always featured great stories, with a real interest in local art and they have taken some incredible photos over the years - thanks Wynnum Herald! and thanks Bianca.

Well, there it is! in black and white, and official - Sharlene is the new Gallery Director and we couldn't have wished for anyone more suitable than Sharlene. She will be just wonderful I know it, and dont you believe about the "big shoes to fill" as Sharlene will bring her own ideas into the gallery and I'm sure it will continue to be one of the best in Brisbane, that is why all our wonderful artists are so loyal. I look forward to coming along to the first exhibition planned in November. (ps love love love the Kendall painting "Saxy Man" in the photo shoot - good choice from the photographer! so bright and colourful, just like the gallery. So its goodbye and thanks for the wonderful support over the last 10 years - I've loved every second at the gallery - and my artists are simply the best there is, how very fortunate I have been and what wonderful customers I have had the pleasure of meeting - so a big thank you everyone!.....Janet

What an amazing collection of oils we have just received by Michael Cawdrey, I hung them on our beautiful white wall as you walk into the gallery and what a wonderful display - talk about turning heads! This is traditional art in its true form - Michael is a very talented artist, his works glisten with light and shade, and the quality is just superb. We are incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful stable of QUEENSLAND artists and they have stayed loyal to our gallery all these years. I started 10 years ago and Michael was well and truly established with the previous owner long before I started and he continues to this day. Beautiful scenes of Brisbane, Bribie and Melbourne.

Have some wonderful news to bring you and there isn't enough days for me to keep writing the blog, as Sharlene - our new Gallery Director will be taking over the reigns shortly - exciting! as I head off into the (Manly) sunset....but I'll make sure I post some wonderful photos in the next day or two.

Helen Beaver - what a delightful artist, so elegant and poised just like her paintings. I just had to take a photo when she delivered her latest works, as along came her special companion "Otto" a rescued pooch and now very spoilt! he is adorable and he loves coming in the car to accompany Helen on her deliveries. This is a beautiful collection of watercolours taken from Helen's last trip overseas and a special place she loves around the Brisbane Valley and the very pretty Bellingen.

An exquisite new oil on canvas by Christopher Hooper. The light and shade in this work is just exquisite. Chris actually "finished off" the painting by trekking through the bush and set up his easel and captured the last rays of light to get the colours "in situ". We quite often have a lot of seascapes at The Manly Gallery - however, how refreshing to see a lovely piece of Australian bush to compliment the seascapes from time to time. Keep trekking in the bush Chris if you can give us such beautiful work like this - what an inspiration.

I have spent the day training and stock-taking with the new owner of the Gallery - she is just wonderful and I'm sure everyone is going to love what she has in plan for the gallery - a very exciting time. As I spend my last days at the gallery - I am thoroughly enjoying my time as I take in all the wonderful things that have happened over all the years - I have been blessed with gorgeous artists and customers - what more can a girl ask for! Luckily, we have now got two beautiful pieces from Richard Bogusz and what gems they are - seems to be a nice color palette change, which is refreshing and beautifully applied. Today, everyone was commenting on how special these new pieces are and I totally agree. The lower images show the work "in situ" so you have an idea of how beautiful they look on the wall.

Loving.....these divine little paintings by our wonderful artist Kendall Perkins. How absolutely gorgeous would they be in a childs room or a "big childs room" for that matter! they are just so whimsical with opalescent colours radiating all over the canvas. I just love them and framed beautifully in a silvery frame. Had to take a close up to show the detail which is simply gorgeous - playful and fun.

One thing I do love and will miss very much when I leave the gallery, is my visits to the Artist Studios - over the years I have visited the studios of most of my artists to see "work in progress" and I love it. I finally got the chance to visit Val and Phil Willy, wonderful potters from the Sunshine Coast. What an amazing studio, and I was fascinated to find out the process of the raku clay sculptures they create in this amazing studio. We knew we had the right address when we spotted the sculpture sitting on the letterbox! oh and did I mention what a delicious home made cake we had with a nice cup of tea! I selected some gorgeous little sculptures for the gallery including little houses, little sheep and the new line of magpies...simply beautiful!

An Artist Statement

With these works where I have a figure barely visible within the landscape.. often in a forest or close environment my aim is to illustrate our connection with the natural world. I want the figure to blend with the surroundings which is a way to show that there is no difference between our bodies and what surrounds us.The figures are small, nevertheless they are completely at home and there is no intimidation.

I am the first person in the world to admit I know nothing about contemporary art and abstraction, however, throughout the years I have found it fascinating to take the time and really study the paintings so I have a better understanding. There are currents of underpainting, and the thought process is astounding when I start to hear from the artist just what is involved with each piece - its a passion and you can see that passion coming through. Pene Edwards is one of our award winning contemporary artists from Wynnum. The Acquisitive prize from The Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery -is just one of the awards Pene has won over the past years. We had a fabulous weekend with many artists dropping by and meeting with customers - we had two days meeting and greeting and it was a wonderful experience, everyone was chirpy and happy and it was great to be part of this wonderful gallery - thanks to gorgeous Denise who is my "right hand man"!! and I couldnt have done it without you. The marquee added a touch of "festival" to the days along with the yummy cake and champagne. Thanks also to the artists who helped out wrapping and helping customers out while we were busy, it was great.

Pen and wash paintings always fascinate me, in as much as I feel I want to keep looking around the painting, as there is always lots to see and discover throughout the composition. The top two images are just delightful, small pen and wash paintings highlighting our very picturesque Story Bridge. The large canvas "Pastel Sails in Blue" is a nice sized canvas with a contemporary feel with the sailing boats on Moreton Bay.

Val and Phil Willy are Queensland artists and just love to sculpt. They use the Raku technique for firing. The detail on the outside is just delightful and little touches on the roof with the birds etc give the pieces a very whimsical and lighthearted approach. French inspired? not this time - its the Italian flavour in this new collection of works by Christine Reilly. A big traveller, Christine is a real "people watcher" even more so when she is in Europe. The adorable painting "High Tea" is only small - but its a nice little size to place anywhere. I actually have one of Christine's in my kitchen and I look at it every day - and I never tire of her delightful compositions. The painting of "Italian Flower Shop" started its beginnings out the front of the gallery as a demonstration painting - so it had a lot of input! hope you enjoy this collection.

The Brisbane Rotary Art Spectacular is a prestigious event which is expected to welcome more than 35,000 visitors in 2011. The art show is currently showing at "The Riverside Centre" 123 Eagle Street in Brisbane.

This years Winner for the "Best Watercolour" goes to our very own artist Bruce Buchanan with his painting titled "Across the Lake, Cootharaba". Naturally, we are very proud of Bruce and his achievements and congratulate him on this well deserved award (the Winning painting was sold at the Exhibition opening).

Archibald Prize 2011 Packing room prize winner

Melbourne artist Vincent Fantauzzo has been awarded the Packing Room Prize in conjunction with the 2011 Archibald Prize for his portrait of celebrity chef, Matt Moran.

Matt Moran is now a household name from his appearances on television cooking shows including MasterChef, The Chopping Block and My Restaurant Rules. Moran and his business partner Peter Sullivan own two of Australia’s premier restaurants: ARIA in Sydney and in Brisbane. He is also the author of two cookbooks.

“Matt is one of my best friends. I’ve known him for years,” says Fantauzzo.

Fantauzzo experimented with numerous different poses before settling on this one. “Some of them looked a bit sinister with the knife and meat.”
Fantauzzo chose to surround Moran with meat. “He grew up on a dairy farm, he has a lamb business and he’s very into fresh produce and meat. It’s a bit intense, I suppose, if you’re a vegetarian.”
Born in England in 1977, Fantauzzo came to Australia as a child. He has a Bachelor of Fine Art (Painting) and a Master of Fine Art from RMIT University, Melbourne. He was GQ’s Artist of the Year in 2009 and Cultural Ambassador for the 2011 Melbourne Fashion Festival. He has had solo exhibitions in New York, Hong Kong, India and Vietnam and currently has an exhibition called Light and Dark at the Western Australian Museum.

Vincent Fantauzzo won the People’s Choice Award in both 2008 and 2009 for portraits of actor Heath Ledger and child actor Brandon Walters, who played the young Aboriginal boy Nullah in Baz Luhrmann’s film Australia. His portrait of Ledger was also Highly Commended by the judges.

The Packing Room Prize gives the gallery staff who receive the entries for Archibald a chance to vote for their favourite Archibald portrait. This is the Gallery’s head storeman Steve Peters’ 27th Archibald and 20th Packing Room Prize.

Vincent receives $1,000 and a $500 ANZ debit card.

Finalists for the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes were also announced today.

This year there were 798 Archibald entries, 810 Wynne entries and 633 Sulman entries.

Archibald opens to the public on 16 April 2011 at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

I walked through the Gallery door today and this is what I saw. Beautiful porcelain bowls by Shannon Garson, wildlife paintings by Christopher Pope, exquisite landscapes by Christopher Hooper, Lorraine Rogers and Robin Hines and not forgetting the very popular "glow in the dark" Jellyfish series of paintings by Trevor Platt. Large Black and White Canvas

Just received a very large piece from Russell Kereama - this painting measures over 2 metres long so would look amazing in a stairwell or entry way. The wire on the back has been placed vertically and horizonally which is a wonderful idea as you can swap and change if you need to. This piece is quite impressive and takes up most of my back wall! but its gorgeous and I'm surprised how pretty the lemon lillies are the scene stealer against the delightful backdrop of black and white swirls.

Clay Work at its Simplest

The formative shaping and decorative scoring on each piece display great freedom and fluency - James handles clay very well, fortunately with more expresssive vigour than expressive technique! His birds have a delicate and endearing personality expressed through what might be a simple turn of the head or a twist of the body. James rolls out thin sheets of clay and then wraps it around wads of paper - the shape is then teased out by pinching, pulling and adding "torn" pieces of clay where necessary. James L Peterson's creations have the capacity to involve the viewer at a range of levels and it is easy to agree with his summation that the work is ultimately about the vulnerability and fragility of nature.

Do you love cats? they are such a painterly subject matter and this one is captured in such a mischievious way - eyes wide open - ears up and ready to get up to no good! Beautiful light and shade are the key elements in Michael's impressionist oils. You feel like you really want to study the compositions as its not always about it being "just another city scene". Look at the shadow cast on the wall in Adelaide Street (off to the left) your eye seems to go around the painting, it rests on the blank wall then continues on to the road in the distance then onto the group of trees. To me, the figure in the top painting seems to bring you along with it into the painting - like you are there and part of the street scene, this is very difficult to do at the best of times, but Michael has certainly captured this totally - I could almost be walking behind this lady!

We recently installed arwork at "Admiralty Towers" in the city where the request was for big, bright and colourful - and I'm sure you would agree, they all look pretty amazing. I would like to see further "cushioning" on the lounge though! perhaps we should call in Anna Spiro from Absolutely Beautiful Things blogspot to plump up the cushion supply! the wonderful thing with stretch canvas is that you can have just about any size you wish - all can be custom made. We currently have a 2metre long black and white swirl painting (just like the one in image 4 only larger) at the framers getting stretched and should have it back in the gallery shortly. One of Russell's paintings recently appeared in the Real Living Magazine and was featured behind a bed - which looked amazing.

The excitement of colour is high on the agenda for Lorraine Rogers when she is painting her watercolours. Delving into the colours of jacaranda, turquoise, amethyst and magenta, all come together so beautifully in this collection. On a recent trip into Brisbane recently, Lorraine was taken with the beautiful colours radiating from a colourful dusk over the city, and happily took images to finally paint what she experienced this day. I absolutely adore the bottom painting - what a happy up-lifting piece this is. I love the dinghy propped up in the corner and the towels and togs thrown over the railing - I want to go there on my next holiday! (perhaps Straddie??)

Glow In the Dark...

Trevor Platt has painted a series of "Jellyfish" paintings with a glow in the dark product mixed with a resin - which when applied, gives the paintings a very wet look - it's quite kitschy I know, but so effective and quite frankly we cannot get enough of them - popular appeal need not be a deterrent to appreciate these particular paintings which are very appealing. Customers are curious to see how the "glow in the dark" concept works so we take the painting into the storeroom and turn off the lights - it certainly does ...g l o w ... dont know about putting them into children's bedrooms, may not work there! but everywhere else is just fine.

The Fish Cafe on the Esplanade at Manly are my neighbours - and what good neighbours they are, to have an award winning restaurant on your doorstep is a real bonus. The owners of the Fish Cafe commissioned our artist Pam Walpole for a contemporary set of paintings for their very large wall (see top image above). That was a few years back now. EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE is always asking when is the artist ever going to paint more of this wonderful composition? - based around The Manly Boat Harbour. I am so happy to say that we now have a number of "Manly Harbour" paintings by Pam Walpole at the gallery. They look amazing and all of them have the gorgeous blue hues and abstract shapes that Pam is well known for. I just adore Susan French's watercolours - they are delicate and light with such a loose style of painting. Susan's work seems to shimmer and I guess that is because she can give her colours space, letting it breathe and reverberate - its almost like the shimmering of a mirage - I think she captures the light so beautifully and in a very delicate sort of way. These particular boxes are gleaned from the local markets and if they have a flat lid - then they can be painted! its amazing how some of my other artists actually love these boxes and they have been known to come into the gallery and admire Karen's work and walk out with one of them under their arm - a box for their paint brushes perhaps? They are just great for storing all your little treasures (or those dreaded remote controls)....and you have your own little unique painting. We can take orders or requests for anything special (eg weddings, christenings, birthdays etc)

More Halberts Arrived

Just arrived....new scultpures by Valerie Willy - they are so comical, they make you smile so much when you see these sculptures in the flesh. This one is "Halbert with Bluebird on his Shoulder" and the other one is "Halbert feeding Chooky". This is our artist - Valerie Willy now taking her side of the human form with her unique sculptures (raku). We have seen plenty of her little animals throughout the years - so I'm sure you would agree, it is just a delight to see the human form now incorporated with her line of pottery - the possibilities are endless; we look forward to seeing many more in the future. I dont know about "human form" they are more like a Shrek crossed with a human!!

I only posted new works by Lorraine Rogers a couple of days ago, but had to also show you this collection. Lorraine visited the gallery on Sunday to deliver these new works - just finished! The framed mixed media has all the beautiful tones that are so "in" at the moment - soft latte/chocolate/nutmeg colours - a very sophisticated piece that would look amazing anywhere. The other large piece on stretch canvas is just luscious - so colourful and bright and would look gorgeous on white walls with green and/or yellow highlights. I was reading the latest Home Beautiful where there was a gorgeous beach house featured and thought wow this painting would suit this bright and wonderful house - have a look at the blog which is :- Spots and Stripes and scroll down to the 15th January where there is a wonderful feature on the interior.

Finally, we have been waiting to receive our artist Denise Murray's new scultpure "Question" in the gallery. She sits perfectly in any small spaces - as she is elongated and long rather than wide. Posting a new painting by Denise as well called "Interiors" the luscious red in this painting is just divine - one of my favourites at the gallery at the moment - and a nice large piece to make a statement.

Family Portrait to treasure...

Here is a lovely idea one of my customers came up with for a unique Christmas present. After having their second child, my customer decided to have her family portrait painted with a couple of special touches - the baby's favourite toy, a special blanket, their two cats and not forgetting her husband's (much loved) car! situated beside the ocean where they love. Karen Atkins painted this beautifully in her very unique style (narrative/story telling) and all the artist required was a couple of good photographs of the family. It turned out so beautifully and this will stay in the family for a very long time no doubt......something to treasure

City Cats in Manly Harbour

Our gallery is in Manly, and one of the lucky suburbs of Brisbane not to be affected by the devastating floods in recent days. Having said that, at least Manly was able to offer a "safe haven" for the Brisbane City Council's fleet of City Cats that go up and down the Brisbane River and are "iconic" to our city. When the floods were coming - the fleet made their way down the river and through the Port of Brisbane, then into Moreton Bay and headed south to moor in Manly Harbour where they are all secure - its a funny sight to see them in amongst the yachts etc - they are very welcome and its the least we could do! I am sure everyone in Brisbane has been affected in some way - the bottom photo was taken in Admiralty Towers where I have family - nervous times as the water broke its banks and this was very earlier on - happy that all is well and everyone is safe - a big task to evacuate the whole building especially closing down the CBD. My thoughts are with everyone who has been through this trauma - we love our Brisbane city and its been so distressing to see the devastation.

House Painting

Our very busy artist Graham W Smith recently completed a painting which was commissioned by a customer for their quaint little cottage in Lota (which is an adjoining suburb of Manly). There has a been a tiny bit of "artistic licence" used in this painting to make it look picture perfect - customer was over the moon with the result. Its a nice way of conserving the history of the home. The lower image is an acrylic piece titled "Moorings at the Manly Marina" a nice sized painting measuring 43x62cms. It's so good to be back at the gallery after my short break - I missed being surrounded by all the beautiful art!

Recently our wonderful artist Pete Smit from Cobblecast Australia installed a stunning sculpture in the botanical gardens at Mt Coot-tha, consisting of a set of "Dragon Flies". Here he is installing them in the pond (glad it was him) I would hate a slimey eel to pass by me! even though the images are a little dark - you can gain a fairly good idea how perfect they look in this environment - now if I can just talk Pete into doing a door-knocker in a Dragon Fly design I would be most happy (hope you are reading this Pete and Louise!)
